HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - MANDOLIN ESTATES
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
I partnered with LPAS, and an interior designer, to dedicate hours of design and hands-on construction work for a 13-home Mandolin Estates development in the Sacramento area. This project helped 60 low-income individuals, including 40 kids, finally have a place they can call home and feel safe. These homes are built by volunteers, community support and sweat equity from the very own family members that will live there.
I, representing LPAS, designed and provided Entitlement Drawings for city approval and presented at the Home Dedication Ceremony. Norm Scheel Structural Engineering (NSSE) carried the project through construction documentation.
#TogetherWeBuild

Design:
Four different housing layouts - single to two-story plans, ranging in three to five bedrooms and 1120 square feet to 1480 square feet.

What is sweat equity?
These types of projects, habitat builds, is a program that provides a “hand-up not a hand-out,” meaning each family puts in 500 hours of sweat equity to help build their homes and will purchase them from Habitat with an affordable 30-year, 0% interest equivalent mortgage.

How this project impacted me:
Every one of my projects I see get built is a very rewarding experience. However, nothing was more fulfilling than to see the kids running around in their backyards and the big smiles on the parent’s faces as they were handed the keys to their new home.
