CAPITOL PUBLIC RADIO OFFICE HEADQUARTERS
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
730 I Street downtown Sacramento is the new home for Capitol Public Radio’s Office Headquarters. The 29,900 square feet space accommodates private/open office areas with bleacher seating for large gatherings, conference rooms, production spaces and sound studios. CapRadio will occupy two floors of an existing four-story building (one- level of parking below grade). Due to CapRadio’s sound studio requirements, the circular layout proved to be most effective. That circular concept became the driving focus of the overall floor and ceiling design. The renderings shown were not done by me.

Design Challenge:
The central stair was the most challenging part of the design. For the stair, we wanted to reuse an existing opening that was already in the floor, but it was very tight. To fit, there was only room for a 1-1/2” thick inner guardrail for the entire stair. We came up with one panel connecting both stair runs with a slip connection. The stair also had a coffee bar underneath, in addition to be integrated with bleacher seating that shared a railing system. Lots of architectural and structural coordination went into the design.

Team:
Originally this was a two-person architecture project with me as a project coordinator and drafter. The original architect left the project during schematic design, and I stepped up to carry it through to construction. I was the ‘acting’ project architect, project coordinator and drafter for this project. The design team also included two interior designers and a project manager.
